Seiko Drops Limited Edition Automatic Speedtimer To Mark World Athletics Championship 2022
The 400-piece edition echos the original watch from 1969.
Seiko has dropped an automatic version of its historic Speedtimer model to celebrate its involvement in its 17th consecutive World Athletics Championship.
The original Seiko Speedtimer was introduced in 1969, the year that the first automatic chronograph movements hit the market including the El Primero, Calibre 11 and Seiko’s 6139, which used a column wheel and vertical clutch for added precision.
The 2022 Prospex Speedtimer Limited Edition Chronograph continues that legacy with a hand-assembled Caliber 8R46, which adopts a similar column wheel/vertical clutch configuration and the same central chronograph seconds and 30-minute register on the dial.
Seiko has given the watch a “sand” textured black dial – evoking the texture of the running track – and has highlighted the chronograph hands in yellow.
The central chronograph seconds hand reaches the edge of the dial and curves down towards the dial for optimum legibility while Lumibrite is applied to the hour and minute hands.
The Prospex Speedtimer Limited Edition Chronograph will be limited to 400 pieces worldwide and drops in June, priced £2,740 GBP (approximately $3,600 USD).
