Premiering on MTV‘s Liquid Television experimental animation show back in 1991, Korean-American animator Peter Chung’s Aeon Flux started as a six-part serial of short films, followed in 1992 by five individual short episodes.
Captivating audiences with its mix of avant-garde, science fiction, adventure, in 1995 MTV aired a season of ten half-hour episodes as a stand-alone series. The groundbreaking nature of Aeon Flux generated a cult following which continues to celebrate its cinematic visual style and its subversive approach to animated storytelling to this day.
Aeon Flux is set in a surreal German Expressionist futuristic universe, where an environmental apocalypse has decimated the global population. The bizarre dystopia is centered around the warring cities of Monica and Bregna, inhabited by mutant creatures, clones, and robots. Vying for ideological supremacy, Monica represents a nihilistic anarchist society, while Bregna is a contrasting centralized scientific planned Orwellian police state.
Aeon Flux, the protagonist, is a secret agent from the city of Monica, who utilizes her skills in espionage, assassination and acrobatics to infiltrate and destroy the strongholds of Bregna. Ultimately aiming to bring down her sworn enemy and occasional lover, the technocratic dictator of Bregna, Trevor Goodchild.
Aeon Flux defies the conventional notions of heroic action, in an evocative expression of ambiguity and shifting perspectives. Thought-provoking with its depictions of violence, sexuality, domination, fetish and death which are distinctively open-ended and unrestrained.
“Working in Hollywood, things tend to get polarized into either being pure escapism or something didactic. I’m not interested in doing either one of those,” Peter Chung has said. “I’m interested in getting the viewer to shift his mind into thinking in a new way. That’s really what this show is about.”
