Kanye West Makes Surprise Appearance at 'Jeen-Yuhs' Premiere, Speaking on Importance of Black Future Month
Reaffirming that there is strength in community.
Just last week, Kanye West made a surprise appearance at a Los Angeles premiere for the Jeen-Yuhs Netflix documentary.
The premiere was a star-studded affair that saw numerous celebrities attend including, Usher, Roddy Ricch, Migos’ Offset and more. Variety reported that West surprised guests at the screening and even took a moment to speak to the crowd. The appearance is noteworthy as previously, he publically called out Netflix and asked that he have the final say and edit so that he can control his own image.
When offered the mic to speak at the premiere, Ye spoke about the importance of community and how it sets the groundwork for Black Future Month, “When you have people next to you that believe in you and a community that sticks together, that’s the way that we can protect each other.” He continued with a controversial statement, “Hollywood a lot of times — like I got my man DaBaby right here — people try to cancel us and we all run away from each other and scatter or we are not talking to each other, not communicating.”
Ye went on to talk about Kobe Bryant’s death, “When Kobe died people, there’s people that brought up his mistake, but I always felt that that was a setup, that was something to diminish the man because he never learned how to be a slave. This man spoke Italian. This man could play ball. This man spoke multiple languages. he never learned a certain kind of mentality.” He added that at the end of the day, it is “about our power and our respect collectively.”
Jeen-Yuhs arrives on Netflix on February 16.
