Everything We Know So Far About 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2'
New faces, darker mysteries and familiar corporate adversaries take center stage in the upcoming standalone anime from CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER.
Night City is a place where dreams are expensive, human lives are disposable, and dying spectacularly might just be the closest thing to a happy ending. David Martinez became painfully familiar with that reality in 2022’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but his story was hardly an exception. Four years later, CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER are revisiting the dystopian metropolis with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, introducing a new generation of characters who may be destined to learn those same lessons.
Announced at Anime Expo 2025, the ten-episode standalone series follows four new characters whose paths converge across Night City’s corporate and criminal underworlds. . With its October 20 Netflix premiere approaching, here’s what the trailers and official announcements reveal — and what the wider Cyberpunk lore suggests might lie ahead.
A New Story, But the Same Unforgiving Night City
Set around 2076, the first anime followed David’s ascent through Maine’s mercenary crew, his growing dependence on military-grade cyberware and his relationship with Lucy. Its tragedy embodied a central premise of Cyberpunk 2077: megacorporations control the city, while those beneath them risk their bodies and lives for a chance at freedom.
Rather than another rise to mercenary fame, the sequel revolves around revenge, redemption and the consequences of past decisions. Its official premise brings together a fallen edgerunner seeking purpose and a nomad hunting the person responsible for his clan’s destruction.
Meet Night City’s New Main Characters
Weak “King” Kingsley was once a legendary edgerunner, but has since lost his cybernetic enhancements and reputation. His fall reverses David and Maine’s trajectories: where their increasing augmentation came at a psychological cost, Weak must discover who he is without the chrome that once defined him.
D is a netrunner from the Snake Nation, seeking revenge for his massacred clan. In Cyberpunk lore, the Snake Nation is a vast, loosely affiliated alliance of nomads, whose communities place family and loyalty above Night City’s corporate hierarchy. D’s vendetta could bring the world beyond the city’s borders into focus.
Talia Yang was raised among corporate elites before becoming involved with Maelstrom, the violent, heavily augmented gang familiar to Cyberpunk 2077 players. Her extensive modifications place her at the center of the franchise’s uneasy relationship between technological power and human identity.
Roman Carax, meanwhile, is an aspiring filmmaker carrying a conventional camera through a society dominated by braindance, technology that records another person’s sensory experiences. His desire to capture something genuine contrasts with an entertainment economy that turns even human suffering into a commodity.
Corporate Secrets, Family Ties and Familiar Factions
The supporting cast offers clues to how their stories intersect. Avida, a former jazz singer and Weak’s past lover, is now married to Kang Tao executive Kiril, Talia’s father. Kang Tao representative Richard and Arasaka executive Kitano further connect the cast to Night City’s powerful megacorporations. Arasaka’s experiments helped bring about David’s downfall, while Kang Tao is a major smart-weapons manufacturer in Cyberpunk 2077.
D’s search for his clan’s killer reportedly uncovers dangerous corporate secrets, inviting questions about what these companies know and whom they are protecting. Sal Bigelow, proprietor of Braindance Paradise, and braindance engineer Jessie add another dimension to the story: the business of recording and selling other people’s experiences. Any overarching conspiracy, however, remains unconfirmed.
What Have the Trailers and Sneak Peeks Revealed?
June’s teaser, scored to Rico Nasty‘s “You Can’t Run From Me,” established a brutal tone, while an August follow-up revealed the premiere date. September’s “Cyberpsycho” preview showed Weak’s crew caught in a violent operation; October’s “Something Real” introduced the uneasy connection between Roman and Talia.
The latest official trailer goes further into the characters’ fears and relationships. D appears haunted by nightmares of his murdered clan, while a mysterious red shard recovered from a body hints at dangerous technology. Weak notices something troubling in Talia’s state of mind, and the footage gives greater weight to her developing bond with Roman. These details suggest psychological horror may be as central to the sequel as its gunfights, though the shard’s function and Talia’s condition have not been established.
A Different Look and Sound for Studio TRIGGER
Kai Ikarashi succeeds Hiroyuki Imaishi as director, having previously directed the original anime’s harrowing sixth episode, “Girl on Fire.” Returning showrunner Bartosz Sztybor has contrasted the first series’ Michael Bay-like action with a more Martin Scorsese-inspired sequel, citing interconnected storytelling in works such as Pulp Fiction. Ichigo Kanno leads character design, with Masahiko Otsuka returning for the screenplay adaptation.
The team’s influences extend from 1990s anime to the body horror of David Cronenberg, Takashi Miike and Julia Ducournau. Even Night City’s appearance shifts: harsher daylight gives its violence a different edge from the original’s neon-soaked nights.
The Cure‘s “10:15 Saturday Night” is the opening theme and Petite Meller’s “Watson” the ending. It marks a change from the original anime, where Rosa Walton’s “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” became inseparable from David and Lucy’s romance. Marlon Hoffstadt’s remix of Petite Meller’s “High Forever” accompanies the latest trailer, joining previously featured tracks by Rico Nasty and DOUDOU.
Where Does It Fit Into the Cyberpunk 2077 Timeline?
The first Edgerunners takes place about a year before Cyberpunk 2077, which acknowledges David in its “Over the Edge” side quest and lets players obtain his yellow jacket. The sequel’s exact year remains undisclosed, making its relationship to David’s and V’s timelines uncertain. Arasaka, Kang Tao and Maelstrom supply familiar connections, but appearances by Lucy, Falco or Adam Smasher have not been confirmed.
A revenge plot with corporate ties: D’s vendetta and Weak’s fallen reputation might trace back to the same mercenary operation, possibly commissioned by Kang Tao or Arasaka. That would turn a conventional revenge narrative into a confrontation between someone seeking justice and someone seeking redemption. For now, it is only a theory.
Cyberpsychosis and rogue AIs: Weak’s lost chrome and Talia’s extensive augmentations revisit the psychological price of enhancement. Across the franchise, cyberpsychosis is entangled with trauma, isolation and dehumanization, rather than being presented solely as a consequence of excessive implants. Meanwhile, D’s mysterious shard invites comparisons with Phantom Liberty, where Songbird and Militech’s Project Cynosure expose the dangers of crossing the Blackwall, the barrier separating the usable Net from rogue AIs. Nothing confirms that the shard involves the Blackwall, but such a connection would broaden the series’ questions about identity beyond the physical body.
Who controls a legend’s story? Roman may provide the sequel’s most revealing perspective. Braindances reproduce lived sensations but can be edited, marketed and exploited. In a city where mercenaries are remembered more for how they die than how they live, his camera might question who gets to preserve the truth — and whether documenting violence makes its observer complicit.
When Will Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Be Released?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres exclusively on Netflix on October 20, 2026, with ten episodes. Whether its new protagonists find revenge, redemption or another tragic ending is unknown. Night City, however, has never had trouble making another casualty into a legend.
