Sony introduced the ECM-W5, a new wireless microphone kit built for sound capture. Priced at $400 USD, the system targets creators seeking tight integration with Sony Alpha series cameras and the workflow advantages of 32-bit float recording. Out of the box, the base setup arrives with one rectangular receiver and two microphone transmitters to set a foundation for high-fidelity audio capture on the move.
An advanced set of technical capabilities powers the recording process. The system captures 96kHz audio from up to 500 meters under line-of-sight conditions. Every individual transmitter is armed with 64GB of internal memory, which directly enables 32-bit float recording. This capability captures both quiet and loud sounds with clarity, eliminating manual gain adjustments on the fly so videographers can capture chaotic shoots for post-production without actively riding audio levels.
Sony designed the hardware for versatility and device synergy. The ECM-W5 connects directly to Sony Alpha cameras through the proprietary Multi Interface Shoe, which allows the unit to receive power and transfer data without external cables. For alternative rigs, the receiver records audio directly to other devices and includes a dedicated USB-C adapter for connections to a smartphone or a PC. Transmitters deliver 11 hours of battery life and feature built-in magnetic backplates for pinning directly to a shirt.
The system can scale alongside expanding production needs. While the base package handles two audio sources, users can capture up to four tracks simultaneously by purchasing additional transmitters. Control is handled through the receiver, which features an integrated touchscreen for immediate adjustments. Professionals can also listen to audio playback wirelessly using Bluetooth LE and Sony headphones connected to the receiver. The entire ECM-W5 lineup is available for pre-order immediately and is scheduled to ship in November. Customers looking for custom loadouts can pre-order a standalone ECM-W5R receiver for $190 USD, alongside individual ECM-W5T transmitters priced at $120 USD each.
