Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Architect 61 have officially unveiled design plans for Singapore’s New Science Center located in the city’s Jurong Lake District.

The contemporary complex is expected to span 52,460 square meters and aims to be the go-to center that promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and makes these specialties more accessible. The building is slated to house a series of specialized amenities which will host educational programs and interactive experiences.

The building is designed to appear as if it is floating above the surrounding parkland. The New Science Center is comprised of five interlocking rectangular volumes that seamlessly integrate themselves with the natural landscape of the Jurong Lake Gardens. Each of the courtyards have been strategically designed to offer unobstructed views of the lake and lead from the adjacent metro station towards the pagoda within the Chinese Garden. The property features diverse indoor, outdoor and roof spaces that are set for learning, and ready for community events.

The New Science Center will also include a new observatory for those passionate to learn about astronomy and the universe. A Digital Fabrication Lab with incubator programs are incorporated to nurture entrepreneurial aspirations for young inventors to explore and test. The space also provides various exhibition galleries, facilities, archives and service areas to help encourage more hands-on learning. Design principles such as high-efficiency space conditioning with an intelligent building management system have been added to help the building achieve the BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification. The building aims to reduce energy consumption by over 40%.

Singapore’s New Science Center is expected to open in 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Science Center and aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
