'TAGGED' Takes a Closer Look at JAY-Z's Watch Collection
HYPEBEAST delves into Hov’s world-beating wrist wear.
The latest episode of HYPEBEAST’s TAGGED series looks at JAY-Z’S jaw-dropping watch collection, which includes a number of multi-million dollar watches collected over the course of Hov’s incredible career.
Back in December, JAY-Z was the first person to be spotted wearing a Tiffany Blue Patek Philippe 5711 Nautilus in public, when he wore his while promoting the Netflix film, The Harder They Fall, which he produced.
Hov might have been able to call on his connections at New York jeweller Tiffany & Co. – which he and Beyoncé represent as brand ambassadors – to secure one of the 170 pieces created, but elsewhere he has carved out a world-beating collection shaped by his own tastes.
Nowhere is this more evident than his continuing love for Jaeger-LeCoultre’s iconic Reverso, a rectangular Art Deco design from 1931 with a pivoting case, allowing it to flip over and hide the dial from view. While the system was initially invented to protect watches on the wrists of polo players, the visible caseback has become a canvas for decorative arts over the years and JAY-Z’s own Grande Reverso caseback is engraved with an image of Carnegie Hall to mark his performance there in 2012.
As well as rare tinted sapphire crystal-cased pieces from Richard Mille, JAY-Z has been spotted wearing Patek Philippe’s flagship, the Grandmaster Chime, one of the most complicated wristwatches ever manufactured.
Earlier in his career, JAY also developed a reputation for buying pieces from Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and Jacob & Co. and, if that wasn’t enough, he also owns a one-of-a-kind Rolex DateJust, modified by none other than Franck Muller early on in his career to include a number of complications.
