Mortal Kombat, the action-adventure movie based on the widely-popular video game franchise, will receive a sequel, according to Deadline. The forthcoming film will be created from a script written by Jeremy Slater, who was the head screenwriter for Marvel‘s Moon Knight.

Slater is also known for his co-writing 2015’s Fantastic Four with Josh Trank and Simon Kinberg, along with developing Netflix‘s The Umbrella Academy and Fox TV’s The Exorcist.

The new film will follow last year’s Mortal Kombat, which was written by Greg Russo and David Callaham. That movie, which opened at No. 1 at the box office, was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021.

Simon McQuoid directed the reboot, though it is unclear at this point whether he will return to helm the sequel. It is also unknown which cast members will return for the upcoming movie, though the previous film starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano and Chin Han.

The reboot followed Tan’s Cole Young, a seasoned MMA fighter, as he discovered his secret heritage and became responsible for keeping Earth safe from the cruel forces of Outworld.

Stay tuned for more information on Mortal Kombat 2.

In case you missed it, Daniel Craig says Knives Out 2 will likely be released later this fall.
