Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo’s Milan-based label SUNNEI didn’t just showcase its Spring/Summer 2022 runway collection this weekend, it took us to the future.

Upon entry, the fashion week crowd was encouraged to adorn sunglasses — the new PROTOTIPO3 silhouette, to be precise — as little did they know they were about to be blinded by a flood of lights. The soundtrack came on, and out came models emerging from a tunnel, with each wearing the same sunglasses as the onlookers.

SUNNEI focused not on now, but on what’s next. Notes read: “The show corresponds with the tangible apotheosis of a new dimension of the label which guests get to explore first hand through an impalpable yet revealing experience at a real-life presentation.” Designed by the experimental interdisciplinary agency 2050+ in association with Rizzo and Messina, the show was seemingly more about the experience and how it made you feel, what you were subjected to, than the clothes themselves.

But by no means are the clothes a second thought for SUNNEI. Pieces were informed by Rizzo’s father’s indexing of all things botanical that was then translated into wearable pieces by Messina, constructed in the form of beads, jacquard, and prints across various garments. A particular standout is the pair of fringed trousers, which see thousands of strands of thread fall from the base in a myriad of colors to create a meadow-like print.

For something more subtle, a botanical print complete with indicative numbers graces a pair of light blue trousers paired with a blue micro-mesh zip-up lightweight jacket, while elements of futurism can be seen with the oversized nature of SUNNEI’s trousers and coats — notably a dark green mac.

Complex bags with toggles hanging from the base and chunky tri-tone sandals contrast new takes on SUNNEI’s 1000CHIDOI slip-on sneakers, while a new activewear range that falls under the label’s “SUNNEI 0 WASTE” division features a lining that comes from the use of striped poplin leftovers, creating some of the season’s more understated looks.

Combined, SUNNEI’s SS22 collection presents itself as a gateway into the future, for everyone. From hoodies that are slightly cropped to baggy trousers, or full-length coats and faux-leather bib dresses, the label explored every avenue for the wardrobe of tomorrow. Take a look at the runway collection in the gallery above, and shop for pieces such as the aforementioned sunglasses online now.
