The former Formula 1 driver tasked Skeleton Concept with reworking his own 116500LN Rolex Cosmograph Daytona to include his preferred shade of blue and create a watch to “reflect the world of professional racing.”
Skeleton Concept swapped out the original ceramic bezel with a grade 5 titanium replacement, finished by hand with circular brushing to reflect racing cars of the 1970s and 80s.
The existing dial was replaced with a skeletonized piece using a warm blue-grey “blue horloger” color while a contrasting anthracite grey has been used for the winding rotor and barrel, which has been opened up to make the mainspring visible through the dial. The absence of a solid dial has led to the branding and model typography being reprinted directly onto the watch’s sapphire crystal watch glass.
“The master watchmakers of Skeleton Concept have thought through every detail of the movement, the colors and every curve and cut of the watch,” says Maldonado. “It all has been chosen with precision to make this timepiece spectacular. I can’t help but look at it and see how wonderful the result is. I am very proud of this unique creation.”
Skeleton Concept will now make a further 45 pieces of the Maldonado Concept available to buyers, priced 55,000 Euros.
