Porsche Reveals Details of Its Future-Driven, All-Electric Mission R Concept Study
The concept is the German automaker’s vision of all-electric customer motorsports.
Porsche has officially presented its Mission R concept car. The all-electric competition car combines the German automaker’s state-of-the-art technology with sustainable materials to create a newly developed line of electric motors.
Similar in size to the Porsche 718 Cayman, the Mission R is able to put out 671 horsepower when in race mode. Currently, the Mission R sits much lower than the 218 Cayman and wider. With two full electric motors that feature 429 horsepower unit on the front axle and 644 horsepower motor that powers the rear, the Mission R stays true to the racing roots of Porsche. In Qualifying mode, the Mission R is capable of hitting 1073 horsepower. The motor runs on a 80 kwh battery capacity and is able to supply up to 45 minutes of on-track action.
Porsche also claims that Mission R is capable of going from zero to 62 mph in less than 2.5 seconds and can reach top speed of more than 186 mph. If this is any indication of Porsche’s all-electric direction for future customer racing vehicles, then the concept is expected to be on par with traditional race cars. In fact, with these numbers, the Mission R will be able to match the lap time of a current Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Additionally, the Mission R can recharge from five to 80% in just 15 minutes.
With most of Mission R’s body constructed out of natural-fiber-reinforced plastic, it showcases that the EV powertrain is not the only area that Porsche has focused on in terms of sustainability. The interior also ensures maximum on-track performance and features a screen on top of the steering wheel to provide important data throughout the race. Though it is currently running as a prototype and not scheduled for production, development for the motor will still continue, with the fully realized version expected to hit markets by 2025 or 2026.
