The 2021 Met Gala Is Going Vegan
For the first time ever.

The 2021 Met Gala will serve up a completely plant-based menu.
Vogue reported that 10 up-and-coming chefs hailing from New York City will collectively craft a vegan menu for fashion’s biggest night. The roster includes Junghyun Park of Atomix, Aquavit executive chef Emma Bengtsson, Le Bernardin pastry chef Thomas Raquel, Wildair’s Fabian von Hauske, Sophia Roe, Fariyal Abdullahi, Nasim Alikhani, Lazarus Lynch, Erik Ramirez and Simone Tong.
In lieu of providing their own dishes, the group will instead work on curating a collaborative menu of canapés, entrées and desserts. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour tasked celebrity restaurateur and chef Marcus Samuelsson with selecting the group based on each chef’s talent and individual story.

“They represent what the food scene in New York today looks like … what the next generation of food looks like, tastes like, where it lives,” Samuelsson told Bon Appétit.
“We thought it was important to really talk about what’s present, what’s happening — how food is changing in America,” Samuelsson continued. “We want to be the future of American food, of plant-based food. That conversation is happening now.”
The menu has not been revealed; however, foodies-at-home can recreate each chef’s Met Gala-inspired “summertime picnic” recipe via Instagram Reels under the hashtag #MetGalaChefs.
Normally held on the first Monday in May, the 2021 Met Gala was rescheduled to Monday, September 13 due to the COVID pandemic. This year’s theme is America: A Lexicon of Fashion, calling for a dress code of American Independence. Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, inaugural poet Amanda Gorman and tennis player Naomi Osaka are set to co-chair the event.
Elsewhere, Netflix is cooking up two kitchen competition series, titled Baking Impossible and School of Chocolate.
