Marvel‘s Midnight Suns is a new turn-based role-playing game revealed earlier this week at Gamescom 2021. The RPG is being developed by Firaxis’ XCOM team and published by 2K Games.

The game is inspired by The Rise of the Midnight Sons crossover comic arc which began back in 1992, bringing together an eclectic cast of new and old heroes and antiheroes. Characters are drawn from the Avengers, X-Men, Runaways, and more including Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Blade, Nico Minoru, Robbie Reyes, Ghost Rider and Wolverine. Players command a new Marvel superhero, The Hunter, on the quest to defeat the Mother of Demons, Lilith with the help of superhero allies.

Aside from epic turn-based gameplay, players are also able to explore The Abbey- a headquarters area designed in collaboration with Marvel Comics- in third-person view. “Robbie Reyes, the new Ghost Rider — he may want to play video games. Captain Marvel may want to go spar with you. Tony Stark may want to go play cards,” Marvel’s Midnight Suns Lead Designer Jake Solomon explained in an interview with Polygon. “You choose how to hang out with them, choose how you talk with them, give them gifts. There are [also] social clubs around The Abbey that you can join, and that affects your friendships with heroes. [...] Some of these are pretty lighthearted [since] the story is dark enough.”

Marvel’s Midnight Suns will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in March 2022. A full gameplay reveal is expected to arrive September 1.

In case you missed it, here’s an 11-minute recap of the 2021 Xbox Gamescom Showcase.
