Tamagotchi Celebrates 25th-Anniversary With a Smartwatch
Cuter than your Apple Watch.
2021 marks the 25th-anniversary of the first Tamagotchi ever made. Thanks to a community of dedicated fans and a niche world of creators, this iconic toy has maintained popularity through the decades with 83 million units sold as of 2021. Following the success of the Digimon Vital Bracelet, Bandai Namco has reworked its digital egg to fit on your wrist with fun modern upgrades.
Dubbed “Tamagotchi Smart,” the device comes in either pastel pink or teal with new characters to bond with. The watch is fitted with a touch screen, and voice command functionality allows you to wake up your virtual companion and hear it chirp back. There will also be a “Power Up” feature that lets users record conversations with pets to foster a deeper connection. It’s important to note, however, that “there is no voice recognition function that recognizes the words themselves,” according to the FAQ.
As usual, there is also a co-op play functionality available for you to sync up with friends for minigames. However, the Tamagotchi smartwatch won’t be backward compatible with other Tamagotchi devices, as it uses Bluetooth while the other newer devices utilize QR codes. Tiny plastic keys called TamaSma Cards will be sold separately that will include exclusive items and characters you can download onto the smartwatch.
The Tamagotchi Smart will be on sale in Japan in November for around $60 USD. An international release date is yet to be announced.
