Naomi Osaka Withdraws From Wimbledon Shortly After Sitting Out Roland Garros
But she’ll make a return at the Tokyo Olympics in front of home fans.
Shortly after withdrawing from Roland Garros, Japan’s four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has now announced yet another withdrawal from the upcoming Wimbledon tournament.
The news came from Osaka’s agent Stuart Duguid, who explained that the tennis player is taking time off to focus on personal relationships but hopes to make a return at the Tokyo Olympics. “Naomi won’t be playing Wimbledon this year. She is taking some personal time with friends and family,” Duguid said in a statement. “She will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her home fans.”
Osaka’s Wimbledon withdraw comes just weeks after she decided not to play at the French Open. At the time, organizers of the tournament fined the 23-year-old player $15,000 USD after she missed a press conference. Osaka subsequently issued a public statement explaining that she has been suffering from depression ever since 2018 and that she is refusing to take post-match press conferences due to the media’s disregard for athletes’ mental health.
