U.S. House Approves Bill That Could Make Washington, D.C. the 51st State

According to reports, during a 216-208 party-line vote earlier this week, the United States House of Democrats approved legislation that would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state. The bill now headed to Senate will give D.C. residents “long overdue full representation in Congress.” Currently, D.C. holds three electoral votes, but its delegates cannot vote on legislation.
D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and supporters argue that the over 705,000 people that reside in the District pay more federal taxes per capita than any other state and is quite more populated than some other states. It is important to note that this is the second time the bill has reached the House in the last two years and is not fully supported by all Democrats. Even when the bill reaches Senate, a vote could be blocked due to the major shake-up this would bring to the United States.
