The U.S. Is Set to Rename 660 Locations to Remove Derogatory Term Referring to Indigenous Women
Consulting with Tribes for the new names.
The U.S. Department of the Interior has recently announced that it will be replacing the names of more than 660 geographic features in the the United States with the name “squ*w” — an ethnic slur towards Native American women.
Declared as a derogatory term by the Secretary’s Order 3404, the DOI will be consulting with Tribes for a recommended name change for the 660-plus rivers, mountains, and landmarks.
“Words matter, particularly in our work to make our nation’s public lands and waters accessible and welcoming to people of all backgrounds. Consideration of these replacements is a big step forward in our efforts to remove derogatory terms whose expiration dates are long overdue,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “Throughout this process, broad engagement with Tribes, stakeholders, and the general public will help us advance our goals of equity and inclusion.”
