Futura Laboratories Graces UNIQLO's Sport Utility Wear With All-Over 'Atoms'
The street artist’s key visual motif translated to athleisure essentials.
UNIQLO and Futura are rejoining after only a year apart, though the duo’s latest joint effort invites the artist’s Futura Laboratories label along for the ride. This time, Futura’s signature Atoms take center stage, appearing as an all-over print atop various breathable layering pieces.
As part of UNIQLO’s Sport Utility Wear line, Futura Laboratories’ latest collaborative effort is especially breathable, thanks to DRY-EX and AIRism UV Protection tech that guarantee breathability and sweat-wicking properties. Of course, the Atoms swirls are key to the collection, lending illustrative flair to a series of neutral-toned T-shirts, tanktops and polo shirts. Matching shorts and stretch caps allow for tonal styling, while graphic towels make for an easy poolside statement.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that UNIQLO’s activewear line has brought an influential artist on board. Back in 2019, legendary graphic designer Peter Saville elevated a colorful co-ed selection with abstract shapes and patterns.
Futura began working with UNIQLO back in 2017, right before he became inexorably linked with a who’s-who of fashion industry insiders, including CLOT’s Edison Chen, Off-White™’s Virgil Abloh and COMME des GARÇONS’ SHIRT sub-label. Futura Laboratories, the artist’s recently-revived fashion line, also got in the collaborative action thanks to legacy companies like GORE-TEX and Levi’s.
“For me, the most exciting aspect of working with UNIQLO is their global accessibility and affordable price points,” Futura said in a statement. “In addition, as our relationship has grown, this recent collection will feature, and introduces, my first collection of women’s apparel.”
The entire Futura Laboratories collaboration arrives on UNIQLO’s website and physical locations in late May.
Most recently, the fast fashion retailer introduced its latest Pokémon collection.
