Netflix is honoring the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman in its new documentary, Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist.

The tribute will feature interviews from other icons who had the privilege to work with Boseman in his lifetime, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom co-stars and director Viola Davis, Glynn Turman, Taylour Paige and George C. Wolfe, Da 5 Bloods director Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, the man who famously sponsored the late artist’s year abroad at the Oxford Mid-Summer Program of the British American Drama Academy in England.

“‘Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist’ is an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor’s incomparable artistry, and the acting process which informed his transformative performances,” the official synopsis reads. “Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, George C. Wolfe, Branford Marsalis, Phylicia Rashad and more take us behind the scenes to explore Boseman’s extraordinary commitment to his craft.”

Boseman died in August 2020 following a four-year battle with colon cancer. “Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV,” the family’s statement read. “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honour of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

Watch the trailer above. Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist will hit Netflix on April 17 and will remain available on the platform for the next 30 days.

In related news, Marvel fans are petitioning to recast Boseman’s Black Panther character in honor of him.
