New Balance Dresses Its 878 In Signature Gray Hues
NB’s most famous shades arrive on the under-the-radar silhouette.
New Balance‘s current lifestyle efforts are focused around a mixture of classics like the 991 and 992 plus new silhouettes like the 57/40, but the Boston-based brand is also known to dip into its archives and pull out cult favorites like the 878. An under-the-radar model that was last utilized as a collaborative canvas by both END. and size? back in 2019, the 878 has now returned with a new take on NB’s signature gray color scheme.
Using a heavily-layered mixture of mesh and suede, this 878’s upper boasts steel gray mesh on its base, then uses signature gray suede on the lion’s share of the overlays. Gray leather is tossed into the overlay mix as well, hitting both the midfoot and a piece that rises from the heel to surround the top two eyestays.
From a branding standpoint, the 878 supplies a standard silver N on its quarter, plus a duo of 878 text graphics on the tongue and under the collar. Heels feature a New Balance spell out as well. Down below, a monochromatic sail midsole with ABZORB cushioning tech and a two-tone black and tan Ndurance midsole with a small pop of blue round off the look.
This gray 878 is available at Japanese retailers like Upsuke, and is priced at ¥16,280 JPY (approximately $157 USD). Info on a North American release has yet to be revealed.
