Elon Musk Will Prize $100 Million USD for the Best Carbon Capture Technology
This will be the SpaceX founder’s single largest donation ever made.
Elon Musk has just announced that he will be giving away a prize of $100 million USD to one savvy individual who’s able to present the best carbon capture technology. The Tesla CEO recently became the world’s richest person, so it comes as no surprise that he has a bit of money to give.
Musk wrote on Twitter, “[I'm] donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology.” Details of Musk’s new competition haven’t been revealed yet but should be coming “next week.” Carbon capture involves a mix of various technologies focused on trapping carbon dioxide and preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere. The new philanthropic effort is in line with Musk’s other business interests in technological solutions to environmental problems — it’s also in line with his engineering background.
The SpaceX founder has been suggesting that he’s accumulating wealth so he can either give it away or put it towards space exploration: “It’s going to take a lot of resources to build a city on Mars. I want to be able to contribute as much as possible,” said Musk in an interview last year. This competition will mark Musk’s single largest donation to be made.
