COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT FW21 Updates Archival KAWS Artwork
New and old imagery graces jackets, shirts and accessories.
Teased by the artist himself, COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT‘s KAWS collaboration takes center stage for Fall/Winter 2021. First seen at the runway show held at COMME des GARÇONS‘ Tokyo headquarters, the collection encompasses 37 looks and though the KAWS artwork is a clear standout, plenty of other notable elements are present.
A suitable follow-up to the COMME des GARÇONS sub-label’s recent Futura collaboration, SHIRT’s KAWS collaboration spans shirts, layering pieces and bags, repurposing existing artworks — including chunky CHUM characters — and creating new illustrations of COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT branding. Not the only major collaboration on hand, the imprint also rejoined ASICS for another special edition Tarther running shoe.
Otherwise, the offering was as colorful as ever, but it strayed from SHIRT’s usual workwear inclinations towards something a bit more rooted in COMME des GARÇONS heritage. Monochrome shades pervaded the puffy vests and trousers, occasionally interrupted by geometric all-over prints and navy shades that nod to the label’s French heritage (COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT apparel is still mostly produced in France). Plenty of quarantine gear was on hand as well, including sweatsuits, cardigans, insulated shorts and even a few peak lapel blazers rendered in matching cotton jersey, lined with KAWS artwork for a splash of fun.
Far from the only major CdG show of the week, the Japanese label also held its HOMME PLUS and Junya Watanabe MAN presentations.
