Former Issey Miyake Mens Designer Launches Sleek, Sustainable Brand

Yusuke Takahashi’s CFCL creates clean shapes with conscious craft.

The end of Issey Miyake Men meant the beginning of Yusuke Takahashi’s solo career. For Spring/Summer 2021, the Japanese designer has introduced the debut lineup from his own label, CFCL, appropriately named “VOL.1.”

Entrenched in conscious craftsmanship, CFCL (Clothing For Contemporary Life) makes versatile apparel rooted in the similarly technical appeal to Takahashi’s work for Miyake. Indeed, its primary offering comprises knitwear developed by specially programmed computers that weave certified eco-friendly polyester yarns into soft, comfortable daily wear essentials. Takahashi looked to the flowing shapes of fine pottery for inspiration, channeling this motif into seamless construction and modular shapes that can blend together season after season.

To kick things off, CFCL’s VOL.1 collection delivers a host of easygoing layering pieces, like boxy T-shirts, tank tops, trim sweaters and bomber jackets, almost entirely crafted from its propriety woven textiles and executed in versatile neutral tones. These are accented by more progressive shapes that include wide-sleeved blazers and flared rib pants, which offer exploratory shapes that remain entrenched in wearability. Womenswear takes an especially adventurous tact while menswear balances the more forward-thinking items with staples like crisp white shirts and baseball caps.

Stay up to date via CFCL’s website and look for the new items to hit international stores that include Galeries Lafayette, UNITED ARROWS, SKP and more. CFCL will also sell the new goods on its own site.

Elsewhere in Japan, Miyake-affiliated label tac:tac introduced its own gender fluid SS21 offering.
