Daata Art Fair Will Feature Hundreds of Digital-Only Artworks
20 international galleries will participate in the inaugural edition.
Art fairs including Art Basel Miami may have been cancelled for the year due to COVID-19. But, that isn’t putting a stop to online art sales which have been increasing across the global gallery sector amid the health crisis.
Now, a virtual platform dedicated to purveying digital and video art is set to launch its first-ever festival. Called Daata Fair, the installment is an extension of a platform founded in 2015 by David Gryn which commissions original sound, video and online works that can be streamed or downloaded from its site. As of now, there are over 400 works by artists including Tracey Emin, Larry Achiampong, Chloe Wise and more that have been commissioned.
“The logic of the fair is straightforward; we want to centre it around other fairs,” Gryn said in a statement. “We are not in competition with Frieze or Fiac [both cancelled this year]; we’re working in tandem with them. I’ve been working in the field for more than 20 years and always want to find new audiences, connections and collectors.”
Galleries participating in Daata Fair are charged a “small fee” that goes towards marketing and production costs. The list of participating galleries includes Galerie Allen, Dvir Gallery, François Ghebaly, Frutta, Kavi Gupta, Hauser & Wirth and many others. Hot Wheels gallery in Athens, Greece is planning to virtually display a 16mm video work called Hidden Song (2017) by Delia Gonzalez. A total of 20 galleries will take part in the inaugural edition with each dealer showing up to six works by a single artist.
Artists set to showcase works at the Daata fair include Angelica Mesiti at Paris-based Galerie Allen, Ana Maria Millan at Instituto de Vision from Bogotá, as well as Yuki Okumura at Misako & Rosen gallery. Price points for the works by Okumura range from $6,000 to $9,000 USD.
