Nick Hakim Takes to 'Colbert' to Perform "QADIR"
A soulful ode to a lost friend.
While the late night TV hosts hunker down during the ongoing quarantine, they continue to showcase new music from emerging artists without sacrificing the necessary social distancing measures. In that vein, Nick Hakim made his The Late Show with Stephen Colbert debut on July 7 with his soulful song, “QADIR.”
A single from Hakim’s recent WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD, “QADIR” is an ode to Hakim’s friend, Qadir Imhotep West, who passed away at age 25 in 2018. The song, trimmed down from its lengthier iteration for the performance, is a somber reflection on the fleeting time we spend with friends and family on Earth. “Oh, I miss you dearly,” Hakim reflects, “Some of us wear masks/Because some can’t adapt.” Smooth R&B backing is provided by Hakim’s live band, who appear in bubbles next to Hakim, who sings in front of a green screen image of an illustrated sidewalk and corner store.
