Public Enemy Takes Aim at Presidency With New Song "State of the Union (STFU)"
Confronting the current political climate.
Public Enemy has unveiled a brand new track titled “State of the Union (STFU).” The OG hip-hop duo has been known for their unapologetic stance on political matters, like with the infamous track “Fight the Power” from Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do The Right Thing.
As the name of the song suggests, Chuck D and Flava Flav are confronting the current social climate of the U.S., taking aim at the presidency. The song measures at approximately three minutes driven by blaring mid-tempo instrumentals filled with wavy synths and heavy snare drums, courtesy of producer DJ Premier. Blending seamlessly with the beat, Chuck D delivers a series of charged up lines like “White house killer, dead in lifelines / Vote this joke out, or die tryin’” and “Make America great again the middle just love it / When he wanna talk Walk y’all straight to them ovens,” while Flava Flav comes in at the hook. Chuck D noted in a press release, “our collective voices keep getting louder, The rest of the planet is on our side. But it’s not enough to talk about change. You have to show up and demand change. Folks gotta vote like their lives depend on it, cause it does.” Flavor Flav added, “Public Enemy tells it like it is. It’s time for him to GO.”
