Watch Carhartt WIP's 2018 Roller Skating Documentary 'Soul Skate'
A look into Detroit’s annual four-day roller skating festival.
Carhartt WIP has released its 2018 documentary Soul Skate, which gives insight into the annual four-day Detroit roller skating festival. The now free to watch documentary, made in partnership with Dazed Digital, NTS Radio, and directed by Ramone Anderson, dives into the Kenny Dixon Jr. event and the roller skating sub-culture.
It also showcases various crews coming together from around the world to compete with one another, alongside several small interviews with the skaters explaining what the event means to them. The Soul Skate event culminates in a Saturday night skate-marathon that lasts from 11PM to 5AM, where folks of all ages take to the rink to show off their unique style. The doc also delves into the cultural and political history of roller skating in Detroit, which goes all the way back to the 1950s and 60s.
