RAMMELLZEE x Supreme Spring 2020 Collection
An expansive tribute to the late, great Queens artist, featuring new sweatsuits, tees and more.
As part of its Spring 2020 collection, Supreme has prepared a capsule with the estate of late New York graffiti legend RAMMELLZEE. Consisting of GORE-TEX equipped outerwear and De Martini messenger bags — both of which released as part of the Spring 2020 season’s inaugural drop — plus new fleece sweatsuits and tees, the offerings serve as a colorful, vivid tribute to a pioneer of Big Apple street art that spans three different stages of his career.
Originally from Far Rockaway, Queens, RAMMELLZEE began his artistic journey by writing graffiti on the heavily trafficked A train during the ’70s, developing a signature jagged lettering style that’s visible on one of the collection’s T-shirts. In the ’80s, he moved toward abstract, neon-splotched paintings that were bold in style and color alike, blending a compelling cacophony of tones and textures. These conceptual artworks are nodded to by new heavyweight fleece hoodies and sweats as well as the previously released GORE-TEX anoraks, pants and hats plus De Martini messenger bags — each adorned with colorful all-over print.
Finally, in the ’90s RAMMELLZEE mostly relegated himself to the “Battle Station,” his expansive studio in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. Here, he created giant sculptures called the “Garbage Gods,” gargantuan figures with names like “Vain the Insane” and “Chaser the Eraser” that are acknowledged by the collection’s second and final graphic T-shirt style. Besides his personal artistic achievements, RAMMELLZEE worked closely with other New York luminaries like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jim Jarmusch, making him an apt choice to serve as Supreme’s latest collaborative partner.
Due to store closures caused by the novel coronavirus, the Rammelzee x Supreme hoodies and T-shirts will release exclusively on Supreme’s webstore come Thursday, March 19 in the US and Europe. They’ll then arrive in Japanese doors/the JP online store March 21. Select styles of GORE-TEX outerwear and messenger bags are available now.
