Shabazz Palaces' Ishmael Butler Reflects on Fatherhood in Visual for "Fast Learner"
Featuring a cameo from his son, Lil Tracy.
After announcing the release of The Don of Diamond Dreams just last month, Shabazz Palaces — made up of MC Ishmael Butler and producer/multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire — has returned with an endearing visual for the project’s lead single, “Fast Learner” featuring Purple Tape Nate.
The cinematic music video was directed by frequent Shabazz collaborator Stephan Gray, capturing Butler and New York-based dancer Umaara Elliot as they wander through the sun-dripped streets of what Shabazz calls “the Quartz City.” On the track, Butler reflects on fatherhood, with the visual reflecting this by featuring a cameo from his son, Lil Tracy. Butler has previously shared via press release that the album was inspired by his experience of watching his son grow up.
You can watch the visual for “Fast Learner” above. The Don of Diamond Dreams arrives via Sub Pop on April 17.
