Greg Lauren Repurposes 'Scraps' into New Garments for FW20
Utilizing tents, blankets and more.
For Fall/Winter 2020, Los Angeles-based designer Greg Lauren is launching his “GL SCRAPS” initiative, which allows the scraps of recycled products to be made into new apparel. From the very beginning, more than half of every Greg Lauren collection has been produced from repurposed fabrics. Since then, the label has utilized scraps of wastage, including 8,000 tents, to create “SCRAPWORK.”
Around 40% of the apparel in the FW20 collection are constructed with scraps. One bag of “scraps” creates 13 yards of SCRAPWORK; six yards of SCRAPWORK is used to make a three-piece suit. “I fell so in love with the beauty of every piece from every vintage fabric, I wouldn’t throw away any scrap,” Lauren explains. “I’d see a scrap and think ‘that’d make a great collar, or pocket flap’… a small scrap with a distressed grommet, or snap would always find a way into the next garment.”
A patchwork-like aesthetic informs the collection, as scraps are used in unique ways. For example, a kimono-like garment incorporates parts of a blanket, while wide-leg trousers are made of patchwork denim or pieces of tents. Elsewhere, knitwear is paired with loose-fitting pants and matching sets arrive in all-over houndstooth. A military-inspired color palette of army green and beige unites the collection.
