HudMo & Lunice Revive TNGHT with Boisterous New Cut "Serpent"
The prolific beatsmith duo is back after a six-year hiatus.
It’s been a long road for the prolific beatsmith duo TNGHT. Made up of genre-bending producers Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, the duo’s riotous self-titled debut EP from 2012 effectually transfused the sonic landscapes of underground dance music and hip-hop, landing an opportunity to produce on Kanye West’s Yeezus and more. As fans irked over the duo’s announcement that they would be taking an indefinite hiatus from the project in 2013, much skepticism surrounding a potential return remained. Earlier this year Lunice reignited hopes for TNGHT’s return after teasing new material in an interview earlier this year. Over the past weekend, those hopes were fulfilled when both artists further teased the return, today releasing a brand new heavy-handed single entitled “Serpent.”
“Serpent” is nothing short of what fans can expect from the prodigious duo. It is filled with the same genre-bending energy that effortlessly unites underground electronic music and hip-hop, whereby their signature bells, something first explored on tracks like “Bugg’n,” still remain in place. More effects include a squawking-like sample (presumably Lunice), yelling in the background.
Following the duo’s hiatus announcement, both went on to focus on solo projects—HudMo released his debut studio album Lantern in 2015, following the project with a soundtrack for Watch Dogs 2 the following year. Lunice dropped off his debut album CCCLX in 2017.
