Cristiano Ronaldo Discusses Rivalry & Relationship With Leo Messi in Joint Interview
Ronaldo even extended an invitation to dinner.
The rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has defined European football for the past 15 years, with the two players’ winning 10 Ballon D’Or awards between them since 2008. Ronaldo has now discussed his relationship and rivalry with the Barcelona legend in a new joint interview conducted at the Champion’s League draw in Monaco.
Speaking about their competition to be the best player in the world, Ronaldo explained that “we shared the stage for 15 years, me and him. I don’t know if its ever happened in football, the same two guys on the same stage all the time. It’s not easy, and of course we have a good relationship. We’ve not had a dinner together yet, but I hope in the future. We had that battle the last 15 years. He pushed me and I pushed him as well so its good to be part of the history of football. I’m there and of course he’s there.”
Both Messi and Ronaldo were talking ahead of the announcement of this year’s winner of the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award, which this year was won by Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.
