The new trailer for Brad Pitt‘s upcoming film Ad Astra shows off beautiful vistas of space and various planetary expeditions. Directed by James Gray, the trailer also finally delves into why folks are attempting to find Tommy Lee Jones‘ character (Pitt’s father) in the vastness of space and why his location could threaten all life on Earth.

Donald Sutherland, a colleague of Jones who will accompany Pitt in finding him, also states in the trailer that “the enemy up here is not a person or a thing, it’s the endless void.” This has lead many to believe the film will focus on a much more existential threat in the galaxy, like extreme isolation or a force of nature as opposed to alien life. This is reflected in the ominous visuals of space shown in the footage above.

Pitt, Jones, and Sutherland star alongside Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland, and Jamie Kennedy. Ad Astra hits theaters September 20.
