Cynthia Erivo Is Harriet Tubman in New 'HARRIET' Biopic
Covering her initial escape from slavery to her leading arm units during the Civil War.
Tony winner Cynthia Erivo will portray American hero Harriet Tubman in a new biopic from director Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) entitled HARRIET. The visuals above begin with Tubman’s initial escape from a cruel slave owner (Joe Alwyn), which leads to her eventual rise as an abolitionist.
Utilizing the river and North Star, she makes it out the South and runs into William Still (Leslie Odom Jr.), a Philadelphia-based freedom fighter who helps runaway slaves find sanctuary.
As the two go back to the south to free Harriet’s family they meet Marie (Janelle Monae), a free woman who aids and trains Tubman to fight. The film will not only show her journey to freedom and time using the Underground Railroad, but also her efforts in leading arm units during the Civil War. It will also showcase the bittersweet romance between her and her former husband, who married another woman after her escape.
