Real Madrid Unveils Plans for a $588M USD Santiago Bernabéu Stadium Upgrade
“It will be the best stadium in the world.”
La Liga giants Real Madrid are looking to upgrade their current Santiago Bernabéu stadium that is estimated to cost a whopping $588 million USD (approximately £450 million GBP).
The new-and-improved high-tech upgrades will not affect the stadium’s current capacity of 81,000, but will however include a new retractable roof, new facade, a 360-degree video screen, and updated seating. Its surrounding area will also be improved with added restaurants, a shopping center and a hotel also in the works. The upgrades are set to begin at the end of the current season and is scheduled to be completed by 2023. Real Madrid will still be able to play in the stadium while construction is carried out.
On the renovations club president Florentino Perez stated, “It will become an avant-garde and universal icon, one of the great future projects for Real Madrid. Located in the heart of Madrid, it will be the best stadium in the world.” Santiago Bernabéu was originally built in 1947, and has been the home stadium of Real Madrid since.
