Natalie Portman Portrays an Astronaut With PTSD in 'Lucy in the Sky'
Loosely based on NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak.
Academy Award winning actress Natalie Portman suits up for space in Fox Searchlight Pictures’ latest project, Lucy in the Sky.
Portraying an astronaut named Lucy Cola, Portman’s character is loosely based on the real-world case of NASA astronaut and US Naval officer Lisa Nowak. In the film, Cola begins to lose her grip on reality after she finds out her astronaut partner Mark Goodwin, played by Jon Hamm, is cheating on her with another woman. Soon Cola begins to descend into a downward spiral, showcasing the psychological effects of long-term space missions. “I just feel a little off,” Lucy admits in the clip. “You go up there and see the whole universe, and everything here just seems so small.”
Nowak, on the other-hand, had an affair with fellow astronaut William Oefelein who left her after a few years for another woman. Nowak confronted the other woman in an airport parking lot, equipped with a knife and kidnapping gear.
Directed by Noah Hawley, of Fargo and Legion fame, look for Lucy in the Sky to land later this year. Along with Portman and Hamm, the film stars Zazie Beetz, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, and Joe Williamson.
