Art Comes First welcomes warm weather with “SURF AFRIKA,” its beach-ready Spring/Summer 2019 collection. Encompassing the label’s preferred stylistic touchstones, the range is packed with lightweight textiles and relaxed fits for ideal summertime layering.

Cities like Dakar and Accra were key inspirations to designers and street style icons Shaka Maidoh & Sam Lambert, elevating their familiar suit-centric design language with youthful cues taken directly from the coasts of Africa. Retro Americana comes into play via oversized chenille varsity lettering on lightweight scarves and parkas, similarly informing the flower-drenched bowling shirt and oversized varsity sweater.

Elsewhere, pleated selvedge jeans are a contemporary update to a wardrobe staple — likewise, satin field shirts offer an unexpected subversion of conventional menswear codes. Enormous trench coats and extended-length shirting further exemplifies this aim. Mesh shirts and branded leather jackets offer comfort in opposite climates, underlining Art Comes First’s goal to deliver a complete modular wardrobe each season.

Expect the new goods to arrive on Art Comes First’s web store and stockists like Tagg Tokyo in the coming weeks.

Most recently, the forward-looking label linked with Calik Denim for a sustainable indigo-dyed capsule.
