Danny Brown's Back, Here's Ten of His Essential Songs
With a new album on the way, we commemorate the Detroit rapper’s return.
Earlier this week, Detroit rapper and future legend Danny Brown made his much-needed, beyond-triumphant return to rap with a style-skewering single that was as Detroit as the blue-collar industries that first built the American midwest. Entitled “When It Rain,” the song was premiered via a visual that featured gritty lo-fi clips, crew shots, Detroit-bred dance routines, and bars that should make your favorite rapper rethink his next release. Most notably, it featured the eccentric styles that have taken Danny Brown to Kathy Griffin sitdowns and festivals serving tens of thousands, as well as caught the attention of Eminem’s team. While we don’t currently know of a specific release schedule or concrete strategy concerning Danny Brown’s next major release, we do know that he’s now working with Warp Records. And, if the same group that pushed and guided records from forward-thinking acts and artists such as Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and more, then Danny Brown is definitely in great hands.
To celebrate the frenzied, ghetto-tech-indebted revival of the Bruiser Brigade’s Adderall Admiral we decided to compile a sampling of what made his catalog so incredible and inimitable in the first place. Danny Brown has yet to drop a weak project and nearly his entire discography is worth hours upon hours of time spent with headphones, but here’s ten tracks that would produce a quality playlist.
