'True North' Docuseries Spotlights Toronto's Rising Basketball Scene
Includes interviews from DeMar DeRozan and Steve Nash.
Created by Canadian Dr. James Naismith back in 1891, basketball has since grown to be one of the world’s most watched sports. Aiming to shine a light on the culture and the rise of the basketball scene in Toronto specifically, Vancouver native Ryan Sidhoo has created a docuseries, in conjunction with NFB and Red Bull TV, following five kids from the Greater Toronto Area.
Aptly titled, True North, the first episode, “The Roots & The Rise,” takes a look at the pioneers who have grown the game and introduces a group of local youth aiming to make it into the NBA. The series also aims to focus on Toronto’s communities, coaches, mentors, and the families that support these young players.
Not only does it follow the victories and hardships these young boys experience, the series also features interviews from basketball icons such as Toronto Raptors star DeMar DeRozan, Steve Nash, Cory Joseph, Jamal Murray, and Jamaal Magloire. Coming in at 23 minutes, watch the first episode above. For the full series, head over to NFB’s website.
