Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance is getting the feature-length treatment in Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, a new documentary headed to Hulu and ESPN. The film follows Jackson in the lead-up to his Super Bowl XXVII set at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, using previously unseen footage to document how the show reshaped the halftime format for good.
Rather than simply replaying the broadcast, the documentary goes behind the scenes of the build-up, capturing Jackson and his team as they shaped the performance that took place on January 31, 1993, during the Dallas Cowboys’ matchup with the Buffalo Bills. The project positions that night as the turning point when the halftime show became pop culture’s main event, a claim the archival material is designed to back up from the inside.
Bao Nguyen directs and produces the film, returning to Jackson territory after The Greatest Night in Pop, his well-received look at the recording of “We Are the World.” Production comes from a deep bench that includes Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports, John Branca for Optimum Productions and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films. NFL Films is also on board, with Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy serving as executive producers alongside Optimum’s Karen Langford.
The performance at the center of the film remains one of Jackson’s most memorable live moments, built on precise choreography and striking costuming. His setlist ran through “Jam,” “Billie Jean” and “Black or White” before closing on the anthemic pairing of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World,” balancing technical showmanship with a message-driven finale. That inclusion of “We Are the World” also gives Nguyen a natural thread back to his previous documentary.
The lasting impact of the set is hard to overstate, since halftime entertainment before Jackson largely leaned on marching bands and artists whose commercial peaks were behind them. In the years that followed, the slot became a career-defining booking for headliners including U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and Bad Bunny, and the documentary sets out to show how Jackson’s appearance made that shift possible.
