Inside the Magical World of China's Largest Wholesale Mega-Market
An award-winning short film by Jessica Kingdon
Commodity City is an award-winning short film by Chinese-American director Jessica Kingdon that takes us into the mesmerizing world of China’s Yiwu Market — the largest wholesale consumer goods mall on Earth. Part of NOWNESS‘s #EverythingIsDesgined program and screened at Slamdance Film Festival, the ten-minute visual gives a look into the daily lives of the market vendors, who work amidst hypnotizing spaces that are covered from floor to ceiling in everything from plastic flowers, neon signs to Holiday decorations.
“The markets have their own routines and rhythms, where the space — sprawling across five miles — operates according to the fluctuating demands of the global economy,” Kingdon explains. Viewers have an ear into the day-to-day business discussions as well as the mundanity that occupies the majority of the hours.
