SlowStudio Creates Stargazing Platform for Hebei Holiday Home
Complete with a plush green sofa.
This holiday home in Hebei was designed by SlowStudio as an homage to the surrounding natural landscape.
Located in the Chicheng Valley in Hebei, China, the property is surrounded by undulating hillsides and rivers. In reference to the spring and summer months, when the hills are covered in grass and flowering plants, bright greens and purples were used across the interior design
While distinctly modern in many aspects, key elements of the design feel nostalgic. Despite it being raised off the ground, rather than sunken into it, the plush upholstery on the mezzanine level harks back to ’70s conversation pits, for example.
This mezzanine level leads up to a stargazing platform, inviting visitors to lay back and take a moment to appreciate the clear sky. Through the day, a semi-circular skylight floods the space with natural light, while at night, it provides a sheltered view of the night sky.
The strong greens and purples are used to create zones around the space – the kitchen is decked out with purple units and purple tiles, the elevated seating area is upholstered in various shades of green, and a ground-level seating area is designated through the use of orange shades.
However, it was important for the architects that these statement shades were toned down by the use of natural materials. Woods and stone tiles bring a rustic texture to the design while adding a “sense of tranquility and stability to the space”.
“In the design, we integrate modern way of living while respecting the rural untamed environment, creating a dwelling that people will linger in,” the designers say.
“The design is a tribute to seasons and a respect for nature,” they continue. “Through the use of colour combinations, lighting treatments, and natural materials, we have infused the space with dynamism and poetry. Here, people can not only experience the vitality and warmth of changing seasons, but also deeply integrate with landscape outside.”
