Following suit with Apple in the race for original TV and film content, Amazon is reportedly throwing $1 billion USD at a three-season series adaptation of The Three-Body Problem. Based on a 2008 sci-fi novel by Lui Cixin, the show will tell the tale of an alien race poised to invade Earth.

Given its critical success, literary prizes and high-profile praise from the likes of Barack Obama, the series would serve as a flagship show meant to go head-to-head with the likes of Game of Thrones. This and its plans for a The Lord of the Rings series could position Amazon nicely in a bid for television supremacy.

Amazon is also teaming up with Steven Spielberg for an original series starring Javier Bardem as Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés.
