Last November, the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Telfar Clemens the prestigious 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. The win infused Telfar’s line with $400,000 USD a year and an even stronger mentoring network. With the support, the Liberian-American designer curated a noteworthy showcase for Fall 2018, harnessing the power of gospel at Spring Studios.
Transforming a traditional runway catwalk into a star-studded circular stage, Telfar dressed his musical guests in primarily white, red, and black garments. The standing concert event began with Dev Hynes playing the piano while Ian Isiah acted as caravan-er leading the pack into a contemporary rendition of “Grateful” by Hezekiah Walker. Musicians included Alton Mason, Midland Agency casting director Walter Pierce, rapper 070 Shake, Kelela, Oyinda, and Kelsey Lu belting out vocals, most memorably, the line “I am grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful.” Telfar himself ended the show by participating in the performance and thanking his collaborators.
The collection itself exudes maturity from previous work, particularly the White Castle capsule. 1980’s retro vibes can be seen on unisex leather pieces and denim bell-bottoms. Standouts feature a classic brown, fringe detail jacket, multi-fabric black knit, and cotton long-sleeve turtleneck with gold embroidery.
