DC Comics has given fans a first glimpse of Ruby Rose as Batwoman ahead of her CW debut slated to air in December. The first official image of Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, sees the Arrowverse hero set against a Gotham City backdrop with her own Bat-signal. She wears a form-fitting black and red suit designed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, who also created the uniforms for Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, as well as pieces for Tim Burton, Rob Marshall and more.

Batwoman entered the DC Comics universe in 2006 as a lesbian street fighter, making her one of the first LGBTQ characters to lead a DC series. Rose identifies as queer, however, her casting announcement was met with some controversy as some critics said the role should have been given to lesser-known lesbian actresses. Rose deleted her social media after the backlash.

Take a first look at Ruby Rose as Batwoman above and share your thoughts in the comments below. Batwoman will make her CW debut on December 9.

In other entertainment news, former Marvel director James Gunn is in talks to write DC’s next Suicide Squad film.
