The Weeknd, 'Straight Outta Compton,' & More Receive Oscar Nominations

The Weeknd, Sam Smith, Ennio Morricone, Lady Gaga, the film Straight Outta Compton and more are all up for an Oscar award this year. Announced earlier this morning, the music-related nominations for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony are culled mostly from pop and R&B fields. The Weeknd’s “Earned It” and Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall” both received Best Original Song nominations, while Straight Outta Compton received a nod for Best Original Screenplay. The Amy Winehouse documentary Amy is also up for Best Documentary Feature. You can check out the full list of Oscar nominees here. This year’s Academy Awards ceremony will air live on ABC on February 28, with Chris Rock serving as its host.
