The concept behind Happy Death Day is simple enough: take the premise of Groundhog Day—a protagonist must endlessly relive the events of one day ad infinitum until they solve a deep-seated issue—and refract it through the lens of slasher horror. In this case, protagonist Tree Gelbman—yes, her name is Tree—must relive one day—her birthday—over and over until she can solve her own murder. The trailer showcases a dark, self-aware sense of humor and sprinkles in some terrifyingly masked figures to pique the audience’s intrigue. Expect a downright Shyamalanian twist in the third act.
