Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster have officially released the first trailer for writer-director Joshua Giuliano’s upcoming slasher feature, River. The horror film made its premiere during the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival before being acquired for a global theatrical rollout.
The narrative follows three estranged siblings—played by Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), and Max Mattern—who return to their rural hometown following the death of their father. Setting out on a remote river to scatter his ashes, their boat breaks down without cell service, leaving them stranded and mercilessly hunted by a disturbing masked figure portrayed by Dane DiLiegro (Prey).
Marking Giuliano’s feature directorial debut, River is produced by Steven Schneider (Insidious, Split) via Spooky Pictures alongside Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund via Eat The Cat. Executive producers include Jason Blum, Jeffrey Tinnell, Robert Tinnell, Matt Brodlie, Jonathan Kier, and Ben Ross, with Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and Independent Film Company presenting the Shudder Original production in association with Upgrade.
River releases exclusively in theaters on January 15, 2027.
