Marc Newson Sheds Light on His NikeLab Air VaporMax Design
“We feed off of each other’s own works.”
Nike is no stranger to Marc Newson. Back in 2004, the sportswear giant joined forces with the renowned industrial designer — who, among other things, is working alongside Jony Ive at Apple — to introduce the ambitious ZVEZDOCHKA before resurrecting it in 2014 in honor of its 10th anniversary. This year, Newson and the Swoosh have teamed up on their second design as the Australian has put his spin on the Air VaporMax to coincide with Riccardo Tisci’s mid-top Air Max 97.
Ahead of the highly anticipated drop, Newson sat down with Nike to shed some light on the design and his reaction to the VaporMax technology. “The overwhelming emotion when you see this thing for the first time is tactile. You want to touch it and squeeze it and figure out how it works. It is a mesmerizing thing really, “says Newson. As you might expect, Newson gave the design a major overhaul, adding premium leather and a cross stitch to the fray as a reflection of traditional handcraft. As he explains, “There’s this wonderful cultural juxtaposition of skills and things going on… It’s wonderful to be given the opportunity to work with all of these incredible new technologies and materials.”
