Alphabet's Driverless Taxi Service Waymo Is Opening to the Public
The driverless cars are being tested in Arizona.
Google‘s self-driving car project Waymo is developing an autonomous taxi fleet, which is currently being tested on public roads in a suburb outside of Phoenix. Once fully launched, the self-driving taxi will be ordered via mobile app widespread and eventually ”cover a region that’s larger than the size of Greater London.”
At first, taxis will have an employee inside to hit the “pull over” button in the event of an emergency, similar to Uber’s autonomous service in Pennsylvania. There’s currently an IP-theft lawsuit brewing between the two companies over self-driving services.
